June 1 LGBT Media Research Project
Hello,
My name is Monica Edwards. I am a graduate student in Sociology at Loyola University Chicago. I would like to invite you to participate in a research project I am conducting as part of the requirements towards my PhD. As a lesbian woman, and avid T.V. watcher and music listener, I am interested in exploring the relationship between gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered media representations and social change. I am looking for folks willing to talk with me about GLBTQ representations in the media and how they affect our lives. I am looking for folks who are willing to do both focus groups and follow-up individual interviews, however, arrangements can be made for one or the other. In addition, for those who prefer, interviews can be done via email exchanges (no in-person required). All participation is confidential; informed consent is required for in person interviews and focus groups. In person interviews and focus groups will last approximately 1-3 hours.
If you are a media junkie, and regularly watch/read/listen/pay attention to GLBTQ media representations (TV, music, movies, internet, etc…) and are interested in participating, please contact me at:
monica@cledwards.net
Thank you,
Monica Edwards

June 1 WCF Org. of the Month: SAGE
June Organization of the Month: S.A.G.E.
From its origins in the basement of the old Horizons facility more than ten years ago, to its current beautiful space in the $20 million Center on Halsted, S.A.G.E. (Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders) has maintained the same vision: to model, promote and contribute to the healthy aging of the LGBT community. S.A.G.E. accomplishes this through providing enriching social, cultural, and educational programs for Chicago’s diverse LGBT senior populations, and by fostering interaction with the larger LGBT community. S.A.G.E.’s active programming schedule celebrate, support, reach out and unite LGBT seniors, and includes educational programs, civic engagement, health and wellness, social and cultural programs, resources and referral information, a Friendly Visitor program for isolated LGBT elders, and intergenerational programs. To find out more about S.A.G.E., and to download a coupon awarding 10% of your Women & Children First purchases to S.A.G.E. during the month of June, visit them on the web at http://www.centeronhalsted.org/prog_mature.html.

We'll start off the night at 6:00 with a FREE discussion led by Ellen Goode, CADC, CBT, ICST, LMT, on how to find optimal nutrition as well as different aspects of wholistic health care - bodywork, mind body healing, inflammatory processes and how to reverse them, hormonal health, etc. Ellen has extensive experience and training in counseling, bodywork and holistic healing.
The discussion & dinner will be held at Cousins Incredible Vitality restaurant, 3038 W. Irving Park, and will be followed by dinner at 7p.m. Cousins has the most incredible quality and variety of gourmet raw vegan food in the universe, but if you are a little afraid of raw, may we suggest the cheesecake, smoothies, guacamole, salad bar and hummus...there will definitely be some things you recognize!! It's all about balance, so following dinner (you'll just pay for what you order, but it will be 10% off if you pay in cash), we will head to Lost and Found for drinks and waaaay more fun. You are welcome to join us for any portion or all of the evening!! Please RSVP to Amy (noahsmom7898@yahoo.com) or Ellen (soundsgoode@att.net) so we can give Cousins a count. Note for next month: We'll be having the vegetarian/healthy dinner at Heartland Café (www.heartlandcafe.com), followed by a special in-house performance featuring a female and/or lesbian band. If you have suggestions for performers for July at Heartland, please let us know! Soon! Thanks!

Wednesday, June 18

Catherine Friend
The Compassionate Carnivore
For much of her life, Catherine Friend preferred not to think about where the meat on her plate came from, but her attitude began to change when she and her partner bought a small farm in Minnesota and began raising sheep. Now, in the same witty and warm style that characterized her memoir Hit by a Farm, Friend walks consumers through the differences between organic, sustainable, conventional, and factory farms, and labels like organic, grass-fed, and grain-fed, while offering critical insights into how meat is raised, why we buy it and from whom, and why change is both desirable and possible.

June 21 WCF Books Launches Sappho's Salon!
Saturday, June 21
7:00 – 9:00 p.m.
Debut of Sappho’s Salon: A Provocative Night of Lesbian Diversions
Featuring Jolie du Pre, Kathie Bergquist,
And the musical stylings of Carrie Lydon and Kate Rickenbacker
Plus special guest DJ SpinNikki.
$7-10 sliding scale donation includes refreshments.
Join us as we launch a monthly series of provocative entertainment for lesbian-identified women and their friends. Tonight’s salon features erotica writer and editor Jolie du Pre, editor of Iridescence: Sensuous Shades of Lesbian Erotica. Du Pre’s erotic writing has appeared in numerous anthologies, including Purple Panties (edited by Zane) and Best Erotica 2007. Kathie Bergquist (a WCF staffer) is co-author of A Field Guide to Gay and Lesbian Chicago. She has been a featured reader at SmartMouth, Homolatte, and Reading Under the Influence, and her writing has appeared in Girlfriends Magazine, The Advocate, OUT, and The Chicago Reader. With a unique sound that is equal parts jazz, angst, and folk, Carrie Lydon, and violinist Kate Rickenbacker, defy the traditional singer-songwriter genre. Lydon’s voice has been describes as “the wistfulness of Dido, the angst of PJ Harvey, and the poetic heart of Joni Mitchell.” DJ SpinNikki is the untamed alter-ego of an otherwise very restrained and well-mannered Real Estate Lady. Donations benefit the Women’s Voices Fund, Women & Children First’s not-for-profit programming arm, and the individual performers.

For the first time in the 12 year history
of Dyke March Chicago (DMC), it will move from Andersonville to the
predominantly Mexican neighborhood of Pilsen, in an effort to mobilize
communities across the city.
The location change occurs after a series of community meetings and
events addressing the need for more spaces for LGBTQ (lesbian,
bisexual, transgender, questioning and queer) people, particularly
women and transgender people of color, in communities throughout the
city.
Pilsen was chosen as the first neighborhood to hold DMC because it has
a history of mobilization by the LGBTQ community and support from
community institutions and organizations.
Gathering begins at 1:00 PM at 1800 South Halsted (Chicago Community Bank Park), and step off is at 2:30 PM. Attendees will then march down 18th street to rally at Harrison Park (1824 S. Wood).
